Overcharge or wrong rental car

Q/ What if I am overcharged or don’t get the car group I booked?

A/ Try to deal with the agent at the front desk, and do not hesitate to ask for the manager on duty. It is always easier to resolve a problem there and then. Do not sign anything you have not read and understood. You have 24 hours from the time you signed the rental agreement to CHANGE your mind if you feel that you were made to sign or buy something you do not need.

Late arrival to pick up the car

Q/I am arriving late and want to pick up my vehicle the following morning?

A/ This is generally referred to as a “walk-in” and you should advise the rental company that you will pick up the vehicle the following morning. You should make sure you know where the car rental company is located. In some of the European airports the majority of rental cars come from the car rental companies’ downtown location and as such they “Meet & Greet” airport clients.

Weekly rate

Q/ Does a weekly rate mean I need to keep the car for 7 days?

A/ The weekly rate for most rental car companies applies for rentals of 5-7 days. Some companies require 7-day rentals. If you think you’ll need the car at least 5 days, it’s usually more economic to book the weekly rate.

Payment methods

Q/ What methods of payment are acceptable for payment of my policy?

A/ We accept all major credit and debit cards except Diners and Electron. Unfortunately Cheques are no longer accepted for postal applications. * Car rental companies insist that principal and additional drivers possess a valid credit card at the time of signing the rental agreement. Please note that many car rental companies will not accept debit or cheque cards for the deposit. Absence of a valid credit card may result in the car rental refusing to rent the vehicle, or the requirement of a large cash deposit.

Pick-up and drop-off of the car hire

Q/ Can I pick up my car at one location and return it to another location

A/ Yes, if your rental car company has a corresponding location at your drop-off destination. This is often known as a “one-way” rental and you will usually pay an additional drop-off fee or charge. Some car rental companies will restrict the model released for a one-way rental; often, they will not permit an Economy car or some speciality vehicles, such as convertibles or vans, to be rented one way. In most cases the car rental company will not allow one-way rentals to other countries.

Upgrade on a car hire

Q/ Can I have an upgrade?

A/ If you are offered an upgrade at the check-in counter, do ask the question, “Is it free?” Do not assume anything! If it is not, make sure you know the cost involved and then decide.

Car hire unavailable

Q) My car hire at Argus is not available, will my policy still cover me for hiring from another car rental company?

A) As we are independant from any car rental company, your policy will still be valid and can be used with any registered car rental company as long as the dates remain the same and the lead driver has not changed. We cover you the individual, not the car itself.

Upgrade an existing policy

Q) We have an Annual Europe policy with you, however we are renting a car in Australia next month, would it be possible to upgrade our policy to Worldwide?

A) Unfortunately we cannot upgrade an existing policy, however we can offer you our Annual Excess Worldwide 31 policy with a 20% discount. Therefore you would have two policies in place as after the 14 days cooling off period we cannot cancel an existing policy.

Arriving at the car rental desk

Q) Hello - before I buy a policy, please would you advise me if Avis in Ibiza will find it acceptable? I am mindful of arriving on a very late flight with a tired family in tow, and trying to explain this policy to a Sales Agent!

A) We bypass the car rental companies completely. We do not insure their vehicle - we insure you the Policy Holder. This means that you can use our policy with all rental companies. When you get to the car rental counter, you decline the car rental company’s Excess. This is a reimbursement insurance. If you have any damage to the vehicle, the car rental company will charge your credit card and you then claim for reimbursement. When you decline the car rental company’s Excess at the counter, they will respond in one of the following ways: they may simply swipe your card (which they will do anyhow), they may block the amount of the Excess on your card or, more rarely, they may actually withdraw the amount of the Excess from your card and release it when you return the vehicle.   At any rate, if you have any damage to the vehicle, they will all charge your card and then on your return home you claim for the full amount back from us.

Worldwide car hire excess insurance cover

Q) I live in Canada and will be traveling within Canada, Mexico, USA (Florida), Germany, UK, Australia and New Zealand between now and Christmas - what do you have for car insurance only that covers all my travel locations, including Vancouver?

A) It would be easier for us to inform you accurately if you specified the type of insurance you would need for you car rentals, specifically in the USA and Canada as car rental insurance is usually different.

Please note that our CDW/SLI policies are not valid for US and Canadian residents to use within their country of residence. Therefore if you are a Canadian resident you would be able to be insured with us for the excess worldwide, but for your rentals in the USA and Canada you would need to make sure that the full insurance is provided with the car.
